Lunac (Aveyron)

Ces trois pierres de granit du val du Viaur se situent sur le côté
sud de la route D.39 entre La Fouillade et Lunac (1 km).
La plus grande est trois mètres de haut.
Dommage que quelqu'un, conscieusement petit-fonctionnaire, a fait planter des
Robinia pseudoacacia pour les «embellir » !
These three fine granite stones are on the S verge of the D.39 road between
La Fouillade and Lunac, 1 km from the latter.
The largest is 3 metres high.
It is regrettable that some petty bureaucratic mind ordered the planting of
Robinias to "enhance" them.
Modern power-lines briefly dominate the ancient
ones.

Standing-stones are rare in this part of France,
but the département of the Aveyron also has a single stone
(perhaps the last survivor of an alignment) known as La Pierre Fiche,
E of Sonnac.
It is a slab 2.2 metres high, also of granite, with blade-like edges,
just 60 metres N of the D.22.
Les menhirs sont rares dans cette région, mais
le département de l'Aveyron en a un
(peut-etre le dernier qui survit d'un alignement) qui s'appelle La
Pierre Fiche, à l'est de Sonnac
à 60 mètres au nord de la D.22.
C'est une dalle - aussi de granit - comme une grande lame préhistorique,
220 cms. de haut.

Another anomaly nearby is Lo Chaval del Rey
(in Northern French Le Cheval du Roi) near Fournols, 1.5 km SE,
so-named after a local legend that it is the grave of Vercingétorix
- or François I !
It is the sole remaining side-stone of an allée-couverte,
remarkable (if not unique) in that it is on a commanding height
(623 metres) with almost 360° of panorama.
Note the careful chamfering of the top of the stone to make a small "soul-hole"
when the roofstone was in place.
