Portavoe, county Down J 572 820 - Sheet 15 Nearest town: Donaghadee
In the early 1970s the Department of the Environment planned to move the stone in its road-widening and realignment scheme. However, the stone's custodians, the McVeigh family successfully resisted, and the road realignment was altered. The DoE did, however, succeed in erecting the tacky wall which is now just centimetres from the stone - and decorated the top with sad little mini-standing stones. This information comes from Peter Carr's excellent PORTAVO published (2004) by The White Row Press, ISBN 1870132114.
